Life is a journey. We have our dreams, goals, and needs. It can, indeed, be beautiful and rewarding, but the reality is that during our journey we all deal with challenges, sorrow, and experience emotional stumbling blocks. Negative childhood, family, and/or social relationships may be impeding our ability to enjoy life. We can find ourselves "stuck", anxious, frustrated, and/or depressed. The therapeutic process can be a helpful "shortcut" to finding solutions and ways to deal with distressing emotions. I believe I have the training and experience, both professional and life- acquired, to assist you in understanding yourself and feeling better. While I practice "talk" therapy, I also follow a Rational Emotive Behavioral (REBT) format. My assistance helps to empower clients with tools to reshape their thinking, emotions, and behavior. Therapy can be a "freeing" experience. It can be a time for growth and rejuvenation. It can be a time to share pain and be empowered to deal with future stressors more effectively. Thank you for considering my practice.
In what I call my "first life," I was a teacher, counselor, and educational prescriptionist working with children, their families, and servicemen on US military bases in Germany, Okinawa, Japan, South Korea, Philippines, and Panama. During this time I implemented parenting services and innovative behavioral programs for students. I earned a masters in counseling from Ohio State University.
In my "second life," I attended the University of Texas at Austin and earned a second masters and a doctorate in psychology. I worked as a school psychologist in both the Dallas Independent School District (DISD) and the Garland Independent School District (GISD). I developed and copyrighted, “STOP---STRAIGHT THINKING RESPONSE MODEL, AN ANGER RESTRUCTURING PROGRAM, ” a program I implemented with children and their families in DISD . I also began incorporating the anger management principles as appropriate in my private practice . During this time, I pursued additional training at the Texas Women's University in Denton, Texas, earning certification as a School Neurological Psychologist/Diplomate in School Neuropsychology. I also have been a consultant and bilingual evaluator for school districts in the Dallas area as well as a contract provider of therapy for patients in nursing homes.
For over 25 years, I have assisted clients in private practice to develop useful tools that help them deal with life's challenges more effectively. In the safety of the therapeutic setting, clients have an opportunity to understand who they are, who they want to become, and to use the tools to make change happen. I enjoy working with all adults across the life span, particularly young adults and seniors.
